What to report
Useful reports include a calculator result that does not follow the stated method, a tax rate or threshold from the wrong year, a filing deadline that has changed, a claim that is not supported by its citation, a broken primary-source link, or an important limitation that the page does not make clear. Reports about contradictory figures on two FreelanceMath pages are also helpful.
Questions that depend on a reader's complete tax return are different from correction requests. FreelanceMath cannot determine an individual filing position or provide case-specific tax, legal, accounting, or financial advice by email. The Disclaimer describes those limits.
What to include
Include the page or tool URL and a short description of what appears to be wrong. For a calculator, include the inputs used, the result displayed, and the result expected. If an IRS, SSA, or state revenue agency publication supports the correction, include the direct URL, document title, tax year, and relevant section or line where possible.
Use the prefilled correction-request email or write directly to freelancemath.mail@gmail.com. Do not send a Social Security number, tax return, bank information, government login, or other sensitive personal data. A correction can normally be investigated from the published page, the calculator inputs, and the controlling public source.
How a report is reviewed
- The project editors identify the affected page, tax year, code path, copy, citation, or structured-data field.
- A calculator issue is reproduced with the supplied inputs. The displayed output, intermediate math, worked examples, and automated tests are compared where they apply.
- The disputed statement or figure is checked against the current controlling IRS, SSA, or state revenue agency source. Secondary commentary is not treated as the sole authority for a tax rule or calculator constant.
- Related calculators, guides, FAQs, methodology notes, metadata, and examples are searched for the same figure or explanation so the issue is not fixed in only one place.
- The correction is prepared and verified before publication. If the original page is accurate, no change is made solely because a different estimate or interpretation was submitted.
Reports with a clear effect on current calculator output, deadlines, eligibility, or tax-year figures receive priority over style suggestions. FreelanceMath does not promise a response or resolution within a fixed period. Confirmed errors are corrected as soon as practicable after the necessary source and implementation checks are complete.
A report can also lead to a clarification when the calculation is correct but the explanation could cause a reasonable reader to misunderstand the result. If the cited source does not support a requested change, the published figure remains in place until controlling guidance provides a basis for revising it.
How corrections are published
A material correction updates the affected code and explanatory content together. The page's visible last-updated date and structured modification date are revised when the correction ships. If the change affects the shared calculation framework or documents a site-wide method change, it is also recorded in the Methodology version log.
Minor spelling, grammar, formatting, or link-label changes may be published without a separate public correction entry when they do not alter meaning. A source URL can be replaced without changing the underlying claim if the new URL points to the same controlling publication. Materiality depends on whether the change affects a number, rule, conclusion, limitation, or decision a reader could take from the page.
Responsibility and independence
The FreelanceMath project editors are responsible for investigating reports and deciding whether published material needs correction. Advertisers, sponsors, and any future affiliate partners do not approve correction decisions and cannot prevent an accurate correction from being published. The Editorial Policy explains the source, verification, update, and independence standards that apply before and after publication. More context about the project is available on the About page.
