No 1099-NEC This Year? The $2,000 Threshold and What You Still Owe

Updated October 26, 2026 · ~6 min read

For payments made in 2026, a client only has to send you a Form 1099-NEC if it paid you $2,000 or more during the year. Until 2025 the line was $600. Many freelancers will get fewer forms in early 2027 than they are used to. None of that changes what you owe: every dollar of freelance income is taxable, form or no form.

The short answer

  • The threshold is now $2,000. It applies to payments made in 2026 and later, so the first forms under it arrive in early 2027. Your 2025 forms still used $600.
  • You still owe tax on all of it. The IRS says freelance and gig income has to be reported even when no 1099 was issued. A missing form only means the client didn't have to tell the IRS.
  • Forms for 2026 are due February 1, 2027. The usual January 31 deadline falls on a Sunday, so it moves to the next business day.

What changed, and what didn't

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21) raised the minimum for reporting most payments on Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC from $600 to $2,000. The IRS instructions for those forms apply it to tax years beginning after 2025 and say the amount may be adjusted for inflation starting in calendar year 2027. The same $2,000 line now decides when a payer has to start backup withholding.

Form 1099-MISC, gross proceeds paid to an attorney$600$600 (unchanged)

Why you may get fewer forms

  • Small clients. Anyone who paid you less than $2,000 in 2026 no longer has to file a 1099-NEC for you. A one-off logo, a short consulting call or a few articles can all fall under it.
  • Card and app payments. Payments by credit card, payment card or a third-party network such as PayPal go on Form 1099-K from the payment company, never on a 1099-NEC. A 1099-K is only required above $20,000 and 200 transactions.
  • Clients paying your company. Payments to a corporation, including an LLC taxed as an S or C corporation, are generally exempt. A single-member LLC that is a disregarded entity is not a corporation for this rule.
  • Clients that forget. Some payers miss the deadline or skip the form. That is their problem with the IRS, not a reason to leave the income off your return.

What you still owe

Income tax and self-employment tax are owed on your net profit, which starts from everything clients paid you. Form 1099-NEC is an information return: it tells the IRS what one payer paid, and the IRS uses it to check your return. It is not what makes the income taxable, and you don't attach it to your return.

Self-employment tax applies once your net earnings from self-employment for the year reach $400. That test is on the total from every client, so three clients who each paid you $1,500 count the same as one who paid $4,500.

Worked example

Jordan, single, Texas, $60,000 from 7 clients

ClientPaid in 20261099-NEC?
Agency A$22,000Yes
Agency B$18,500Yes
Startup C$9,000Yes
Studio D$6,000Yes
Shop E$1,800No
Podcast F$1,500No
Nonprofit G$1,200No

Jordan receives 4 forms adding up to $55,500. The other $4,500 has no form, and under the old $600 rule all three of those clients would have sent one.

With no expenses, tax on the full $60,000 comes to about $12,037. Reporting only the forms would give about $11,000, which is $1,037 short: about $636 of self-employment tax and $401 of federal income tax. That shortfall would come back with interest and possibly an accuracy penalty.

2026 rates and standard deduction, QBI deduction included, Texas has no state income tax. Computed with the same code as the 1099 tax calculator.

How to report income without a form

  1. Start from your own records. Add up what every client paid you in 2026 from invoices, your bank and payment-app deposits. That total is your gross receipts on Schedule C.
  2. Use forms as a check, not a source. Your gross receipts should be at least the total of the 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC and 1099-K forms you receive. If a form shows more than the client really paid, ask the client for a corrected form.
  3. Don't count the same payment twice. A client that paid through a payment app may show up on a 1099-K. Count the payment once.
  4. Keep paying quarterly on the full amount. Estimated tax is based on all your income, not just the formed part. The quarterly tax guide covers the January 15, 2027 payment, and the quarterly tax estimator works out the amount.

If you pay subcontractors

The same rule works in your favor if you hire other freelancers. For 2026 you only have to file a 1099-NEC for a contractor you paid $2,000 or more, and only for payments not made by card or through a payment network. Collecting a Form W-9 before the first payment is still the simplest way to have their details ready. The 1099 vs W-2 guide covers how to tell a contractor from an employee.
